Hollinger Hullinger Holinger Holliger Holiger Hollingerus Sagas

This interesting book was compiled and published by

            HENRY KLINE HOLLINGER 1897/1972

            HOLLINGER GENEALOGY

            Lancaster, Pa
            1959

Henry released the material to the public domain in 1965.

We are greatful to Henry and many others who compiled the information. Henry credited those who helped him the book. Henry of course produced this work long before the internet, but I am sure he would be pleased that many more people can now read his work.

We also thank the Mennonite Life Library at 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, PA 17602 who preserved a copy of the document, and provided it to us. We have put the document online - click to read it here.

The book is confusing, and has a great deal of German or Swiss text.  But it has a substantial amount of information about our early ancestors.

A Fine New Book

A fine new book about our ancestry. Very interesting info about our ancestors.

THAT THEY MIGHT PROSPER: AN EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY MIGRATION OF HOLLINGERS FROM THE SWISS AARGAU TO PENNSYLVANIA'S LANCASTER COUNTY, VIA THE GERMAN PALATINATE

Distribution of the Name Hollinger and Harlan

The map above shows the distribution of the name Hollinger. As you can see our relatives got around.

https://forebears.io/surnames/hollinger

Our Hullinger name was originally Hollinger changed by our ancestor. Most people kept the original spelling.

Our Harlan relatives also got around.

My middle name Harlan chosen for Pearl Harlan's heritage.

I am glad my mother did not choose the name from her side.  Liffengren. Which is Norwegian.

Names changed all the time in Norway.  Liffengren was the name of the farm, which my GGGrandfather took when he purchased the farm.  Liffengren farm is still there.

Search for your name by replacing my name with yours,  https://forebears.io/surnames/hollinger

Bear in mind there may be several spellings to your name. There are far more Hollinger names than Hullinger in the world. Not many names of Liffengren.

Our Castle

Our known ancestors came from Canton Aargau, Switzerland. We have been there and it is a lovely area. We have also met our Swiss relatives. and compared genealogies. They were the same for Swiss history from 1400 to when our ancestor immigrated to America. The castle above is adjacent to our ancestral villages.

Hullinger / Hollinger

Our
Our Hullinger family originated in the small Village of Holvil (Boniswyl), Aargu, Switzerland, located west of Zurich. We have visited this community and met relatives. Our ancestor left Switzerland in 1736.

The community is very attractive, with a small castle located at the foot of a lake. A fast flowing stream forms a moat around the castle. The small community is affluent and friendly.

After leaving Switzerland, our people gradually moved west, settling first in Pennsylvania, then Virginia, Ohio, Illinois Iowa, and finally homesteading in western South Dakota, south of the Capital of Pierre in Vivian.
